Surfing Skeleton Bay

Skeleton Bay, on the Namibian coast near Walvis Bay, is famous for one of the longest and fastest barrels in the world. A long-period south-westerly groundswell wraps along a desert sandspit and peels down it in a seemingly endless left-hand tube, breaking close to the shore for well over a kilometre on the best days.

It burst onto the world stage in the late 2000s, when images of impossibly long barrels went around the world. The wave relies on big Southern Ocean swells arriving at just the right angle, so it only fires on certain swells, mostly between May and September. The sandspit is constantly reshaped by the wind and longshore drift, so the wave changes from season to season.

Skeleton Bay is for expert surfers only. The current sweeps you down the point so fast that most surfers walk back up the sand after every wave, the take-off is critical and the barrel unforgiving, and the location is remote, reached by four-wheel drive across the desert.
