Surfing Big Bay
Big Bay at Bloubergstrand is the go-to beach break on the northern side of Cape Town, with the classic postcard view of Table Mountain across the bay. A series of sandbanks and patches of reef create peaks that break left and right, offering something for most abilities when the swell is moderate.
It faces the Atlantic and catches west to south-westerly swells, and the best sessions usually come on calm mornings before the wind picks up. In summer the strong south-easter howls across the bay, which is why Big Bay is also one of the world's best-known kitesurfing beaches, while winter cold fronts can bring bigger, messier swell.
The water is cold for most of the year, the beach is exposed to the wind and rips form along the banks, so check the conditions before you go. It is a good option for beginners on small days and for intermediates when the swell picks up, with easy parking and facilities nearby.
