Surfing Muizenberg

Muizenberg is Cape Town's historic home of surfing and one of the best places in South Africa to learn. At Surfer's Corner, beside the colourful bathing boxes, gentle waves roll over a shallow, sandy bottom on the northern shore of False Bay, giving long, forgiving rides that are perfect for your first sessions on a soft-top.

False Bay is sheltered from much of the Atlantic, so the waves here are usually small and soft, with the best days coming when a south-westerly groundswell combines with light north-westerly winds in the morning. The south-easter, which blows hard through summer, is onshore and quickly turns it choppy. Low to mid tide on the push generally gives the best shape.

Surf schools, board rental and cafés line the beachfront, and a shark-spotting programme operates on the mountainside above the beach. It gets busy with learners, so stay aware of others, watch for rip currents near the corner and check the shark-spotter flags before you paddle out.
