Surfing Supertubes

Supertubes is the heart of Jeffreys Bay and, for many surfers, the finest right-hand point break on the planet. Winter groundswell from the Southern Ocean wraps into the bay and stands up along a shallow, mussel-covered rock reef, producing long, fast walls that bend into a run of tubing sections. On good days a single wave can run for several hundred metres, and when the swell is big and clean it can link from Boneyards all the way down through Impossibles towards the Point.

It works best from May to September, when south-westerly groundswell combines with light westerly to south-westerly winds that blow offshore here. It is at its most famous in the overhead range, which is why it hosted the World Surf League's J-Bay Open for decades.

This is an expert wave: fast, crowded and unforgiving, with a strong current running down the point. Time your entry and exit over the rocks carefully, respect the local pecking order and protect your feet on the reef.
