Surfing Long Beach, Kommetjie
Long Beach runs north from the village of Kommetjie towards Noordhoek on the Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsula, and it is one of the most consistent beach breaks around Cape Town. Shifting sandbanks produce peaks that break left and right, with punchy, often hollow waves when the banks are good.
It faces the open Atlantic and picks up west to south-westerly swells readily. The prevailing summer south-easter blows offshore here, so it is a go-to spot on summer mornings when the False Bay side is blown out, and it handles small to medium swells best before closing out on big days.
The water is cold all year thanks to upwelling along this coast, so a thick wetsuit is a must. It suits intermediate surfers, and the southern end near the village tends to be the busiest. Watch out for rips, kelp and the occasional shark, and respect the local crew.
