Surfing Llandudno

Llandudno is a small, picturesque beach framed by huge granite boulders on Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard, below Little Lion's Head. Its beach break works over a mix of sand and reef, with a few peaks that shift with the sandbanks.

The northern end produces the best-known wave, a fast, hollow right that can throw spitting barrels, while the middle and southern peaks are shorter and sucky and often close out. It faces the open Atlantic and picks up south-westerly swells well, and it is best in small to medium swells with an easterly or south-easterly wind blowing offshore. Once the swell grows much beyond head high, it tends to max out.

The water is cold all year, the shorebreak can be heavy and the lineup is busy whenever it is working, so it suits confident intermediate surfers. Parking is limited, so get there early on a good day and leave nothing valuable in the car.
