Surfing Dungeons

Dungeons is South Africa's premier big-wave spot, a deep-water reef that breaks off the Sentinel at the mouth of Hout Bay. When a powerful winter storm sends a large south-westerly groundswell towards the Cape, the reef focuses it into huge, heavy right-handers, with several take-off zones that shift around over a few hundred metres.

It was first ridden in the mid-1980s and became famous as the home of the Red Bull Big Wave Africa contest, which ran here for more than a decade. It only starts to break properly when the swell is very large, and the best sessions come with light winds. The cold Atlantic water, long hold-downs and strong currents make every wipeout serious.

Access is by boat or jet ski from Hout Bay harbour; paddling out means crossing a channel nicknamed Shark Alley, home to a busy seal colony. Dungeons is strictly for experienced big-wave surfers with the right equipment and proper water-safety support.
