Surfing Elands Bay
Elands Bay, on the West Coast about three hours' drive north of Cape Town, is home to one of South Africa's best left-hand point breaks. The wave peels from a hook in the reef below the headland, running along a kelp-lined point in long, reeling walls that are ideal for both high-performance surfing and classic carving.
The point picks up the usual south-westerly swells and also responds to swell from the north, and it goes offshore on any wind with south in it, which makes it a reliable option when the south-easter is blowing elsewhere. A pushing tide is often best, and bigger swells bring a strong longshore current.
The cold Benguela water means booties, a hood and gloves are often welcome, especially after a few days of offshore winds. It suits intermediate and experienced surfers, and the lineup is shared with windsurfers and kitesurfers when the wind is up, so stay alert and keep your distance.
