Surfing Safi
Safi, on Morocco's Atlantic coast between Casablanca and Essaouira, is home to one of the most powerful right-hand point breaks in Africa, known as Le Jardin, or the Garden. When a big North Atlantic swell arrives, the wave unloads over a shallow rocky shelf and grinds along the point in heavy, hollow barrels.
It only comes alive in the heart of the winter season, roughly from November to March, when solid west to north-westerly groundswells combine with offshore north-easterly to easterly winds. Smaller swells leave it flat or inconsistent, which is part of the reason it stayed off the radar of most travelling surfers for many years.
Safi is a wave for experts: the take-off is steep, the barrel is fast and the rocks in the lineup are unforgiving. It is a working port city rather than a surf town, so arrange some local knowledge before you go and treat the lineup and the local surfers with respect.
