Surfing Nazaré (Praia do Norte)
Praia do Norte in Nazaré, on Portugal's central coast, is home to the biggest waves ever surfed. The Nazaré Canyon, a huge submarine canyon that runs right up to the shore, focuses and amplifies Atlantic swells, so that on big winter days waves rise to heights rarely seen anywhere else, watched by crowds gathered around the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo on the headland.
Several world records have been set here, including Rodrigo Koxa's 24-metre wave in 2017 and Sebastian Steudtner's 26.2-metre wave in 2020, while Maya Gabeira set the women's record in 2020. The giant days come from big north-westerly swells, mostly between October and March, with easterly winds blowing offshore, and most of the biggest waves are ridden with jet-ski tow-in teams.
On smaller days Praia do Norte is a powerful beach break, but the currents and shorebreak are dangerous at any size. On a giant swell the water belongs to professional big-wave teams, and the clifftop around the lighthouse is the place to be.
