Surfing La Gravière (Hossegor)

La Gravière, in Hossegor on France's south-west coast, is one of the heaviest beach breaks in Europe. Swell funnelled by the deep Gouf de Capbreton submarine canyon just offshore arrives with extra power and breaks on shallow sandbanks as thick, hollow peaks, producing barrels in both directions.

The best season is autumn, when Atlantic storms send long-period west to north-westerly groundswell and the weather is often settled, with easterly winds blowing offshore in the mornings. The tide has a big influence: too low and the waves close out on the sand, so mid tide is often the sweet spot. The area has hosted the Quiksilver Pro France on the World Surf League tour.

La Gravière is for experienced surfers only. The shorebreak is powerful, the rips are strong and broken boards are common on bigger days. When it is too heavy, the beaches to the north and south offer more forgiving peaks.
