Surfing Ribeira d'Ilhas (Ericeira)
Ribeira d'Ilhas, just north of Ericeira on Portugal's Atlantic coast, is a long, high-quality right-hand point break over rocky reef and one of the best-known waves in the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve. The wave peels along the reef in long, workable walls that are ideal for turns, with faster, steeper sections on bigger days.
It picks up west to north-westerly groundswells, which are most consistent from autumn to spring, and easterly winds blow offshore. It works through much of the tide but is often at its best around mid tide, and it has hosted many international surfing contests over the years.
Ribeira d'Ilhas suits intermediate surfers and above, and the lineup can be busy at weekends and during the holidays. The reef is rocky, so take care getting in and out, and there is a car park and café above the beach.
