Surfing Supertubos (Peniche)
Supertubos, just outside the town of Peniche on Portugal's Silver Coast, is one of Europe's best barrels and is often called the European Pipeline. The beach faces the open Atlantic, and its shallow sandbanks shape the incoming swell into fast, hollow peaks that throw open quickly, usually breaking both left and right.
It works on swells from the south-west round to the west and north-west, which wrap around the Peniche peninsula, and it is cleanest with north-easterly to easterly winds blowing offshore. Autumn is the classic season, and mid to high tide often gives the best shape, as the banks get dangerously shallow at low tide. The World Surf League's Championship Tour has been held here.
The shorebreak is powerful and the barrels are heavy, so Supertubos suits advanced surfers. It can get very crowded during contests and in good swells, and when it is too big or messy the beaches around the peninsula offer sheltered alternatives.
