Surfing Mundaka
Mundaka, in the Basque Country of northern Spain, is one of Europe's most famous waves: a long, hollow left that breaks like a point over a sandbar at the mouth of the Urdaibai estuary. When a solid north-westerly swell meets the sandbank, the wave reels off for hundreds of metres in fast, barrelling sections in front of the picturesque fishing village.
It needs a decent-sized swell from the north-west to break properly and is best around low to mid tide, with southerly winds blowing offshore. Autumn usually brings the best combination of swell and settled weather. The sandbar depends on the river and on dredging in the estuary, and in the 2000s it all but disappeared for a while before recovering.
The rip running out of the river mouth is strong, so stay inside the main lineup and use the channel to get back out. With its shallow sandbar and expert crowd, Mundaka is suited to experienced surfers.
