Surfing Mullaghmore Head
Mullaghmore Head in County Sligo is one of Europe's most famous big-wave spots. When a huge North Atlantic swell arrives, a shallow, uneven reef close to the headland turns it into a savage left that throws enormous, super-heavy barrels, often with the outline of Classiebawn Castle in the background.
It needs a very large west to north-westerly groundswell, mostly between autumn and early spring, with south-easterly winds blowing offshore, and it is best around mid to high tide. On the biggest days the wave is usually ridden with tow-in support, although paddle sessions also happen.
The wave breaks dangerously close to the rocks, the water is cold and the rips are powerful, so Mullaghmore is strictly for experienced big-wave surfers with jet-ski safety. On a big day the headland itself is a spectacular, if windswept, viewing point.
