Surfing Bundoran (The Peak)
The Peak in Bundoran, County Donegal, is Ireland's best-known reef break, breaking right in front of the town a short paddle offshore. A flat rock reef splits the swell into a longer, more powerful left with plenty of sections and a shorter, hollower right that can hold bigger swells.
It works on west to north-westerly swells, which are most consistent from autumn to spring, and it is cleanest with east to south-easterly winds blowing offshore. Low to mid tide is usually best, and the busy little town has a lively surf scene, with surf schools, shops and regular contests.
The Peak is shallow and powerful, so it is not a place to learn; it suits intermediate to advanced surfers. The lineup is crowded when it is good, and the cold Atlantic water calls for a thick wetsuit, booties and often a hood.
