Surfing Stilbaai

Stilbaai, the quiet holiday town at the mouth of the Goukou River, has a quality right-hand point beside its small harbour. Swell wraps around the point and peels along an uneven reef in long, ruler-edged walls, with the odd barrel section between the tip of the point and the harbour.

The point comes alive on solid south-westerly groundswells, which are most common in autumn and winter, and it is cleanest in westerly to north-westerly winds. Medium to high tides usually give the best shape, and on a good day the rides can be long and the wave can hold a decent amount of size.

Rocks and sea urchins make the entry and exit tricky, and a strong rip keeps pushing you down the point, so it suits confident intermediate and experienced surfers. It is usually uncrowded during the week, but word travels fast when it fires and weekends can draw a crowd from the surrounding towns.
