Surfing Uluwatu

Uluwatu, below the cliffs of Bali's Bukit Peninsula, is one of the most famous left-hand reef breaks in the world. Indian Ocean swells wrap around the headland and break along a long coral reef that changes with the size and tide, from the Peak and Temples on smaller days to the Outside Corner and the long, fast Racetracks section as the swell builds.

The dry season, roughly April to October, brings the most consistent south-westerly groundswell and the south-east trade winds that blow offshore. Uluwatu holds swell from a few feet up to big, powerful days, and it became world-famous after appearing in the 1972 film Morning of the Earth.

Access is through the famous cave below the cliffs, which can be tricky on a big swell or a high tide. Strong currents, sharp reef and a crowded, international lineup make it best suited to advanced surfers, though the view from the clifftop warungs is there for everyone.
