Surfing Desert Point

Desert Point, at Bangko-Bangko on the south-western tip of Lombok, is famous for long, mechanical left-hand barrels that can run for a couple of hundred metres. Swell wraps around the point and peels along a shallow coral reef, often turning into one long tube from the take-off to the end section.

It is notoriously fickle: it needs a solid south-westerly groundswell and the right tide, typically low tide on the push, together with the dry-season south-east trade winds blowing offshore. Many surfers wait days on the point for the swell and tide to line up, but when they do, it is one of the best waves anywhere.

The reef is extremely shallow at low tide, the wave is fast and the crowd builds quickly when the forecast looks good, so Desert Point suits expert surfers. Bring everything you need, including reef booties and a first-aid kit, as facilities on the point are basic.
