Surfing Keramas

Keramas, on Bali's east coast, is a high-performance right-hander that breaks over a reef of volcanic rock and coral off a black-sand beach. It produces fast, hollow walls that are perfect for turns and barrels, which is why it has hosted Championship Tour contests.

Unlike the breaks on the Bukit, Keramas is at its best in the wet season, roughly November to March, when north-westerly winds blow offshore on this side of the island. It needs a south to south-easterly swell to light up, and mid to high tide usually gives the best shape over the shallow reef.

The wave is fast and the reef unforgiving, so it suits advanced surfers. It can be crowded when it is good, and night surfing under floodlights has been offered here, giving surfers the chance to share the waves after dark.
