Surfing Punta de Lobos

Punta de Lobos, a few kilometres south of Pichilemu in Chile, is a long left-hand point break that changes from a fun, sectiony wave on small days into one of South America's premier big-wave spots. The point is marked by striking rock stacks known as the Morros, and swell wraps around them before peeling along the reef.

It works on south-westerly swells, which arrive year-round but are biggest in the southern autumn and winter, and easterly winds blow offshore. On bigger swells the sections link into long, powerful walls, and the spot has hosted international big-wave events.

The water is cold thanks to the Humboldt Current, and getting in and out around the rocks takes care, especially when the swell is big. Punta de Lobos suits intermediate surfers on average days and experts on big days, and it is protected as a World Surfing Reserve.
