Surfing Chicama
Chicama, at Puerto Malabrigo on the north coast of Peru, is famous for having one of the longest left-hand waves in the world. On the right swell, a series of sections link along the desert point, and rides of well over a kilometre are possible, ending far down the bay near the pier.
It works on south to south-westerly groundswells, most consistent from about April to October, and the prevailing southerly winds blow cross-offshore along the point. The wave needs a solid swell to connect its sections; on smaller days it breaks as shorter, separate waves that are still fun and uncrowded.
The cold Humboldt Current keeps the water cool, so bring a full wetsuit. Chicama suits intermediate surfers and above, partly because of the long walk back up the point after each ride, and some local operators run boats back to the top. The wave is protected under Peru's surf-break preservation law.
