Best today: 06:00–17:57 · Fair to Good
On the latest model run, Teahupoʻo is a solid Fair to Good today, with 2.4 m of S swell at 11 seconds pushing 7 to 10 ft faces. The ESE wind is cross-shore at 14 to 22 km/h, so expect some texture on the face rather than glass. Dawn from 06:00 is the pick, before the wind lifts at midday. Tomorrow looks cleaner and a touch smaller, with a light E cross-offshore breeze at 06:00 to 07:00 rated Good at 5 to 8 ft, so that's the one to circle. By Thursday it drops to 4 to 6 ft, best in the afternoon. Heavy reef, experienced surfers only.

Spot guide
Teahupoʻo, at the end of the road on Tahiti Iti in French Polynesia, is famous for one of the heaviest waves in the world. Southern Ocean swells hit a semicircular coral reef that drops off sharply, so the wave breaks with extreme thickness and throws a gaping left-hand barrel over water that can be as shallow as about half a metre.
The season runs from about April to October, when south to south-westerly groundswells arrive, and trade winds from the east and north-east blow offshore. A professional contest has been held here since 1999, it was the surfing venue of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and Laird Hamilton's ride in August 2000, known as the Millennium Wave, made it famous around the world.
Teahupoʻo is for experts only: the reef is shallow and alive, the channel currents are strong and the consequences of a mistake are severe. Access is by boat or a long paddle from the end of the road, and the channel makes a spectacular grandstand.
