Surfing J-Bay Point

The Point is where the J-Bay story began: in the 1960s the first surfers here cruised its long, mellow walls on longboards, years before anyone dared to take on Supertubes. Waves wrap around the end of the point and peel into a small cove, finishing in front of a little car park and a grassy park, which makes it one of the most accessible breaks in town.

The wave is slower and more forgiving than the sections above it, with a gentler reef and long, open faces that suit longboards, mid-lengths and surfers building their skills. It needs a solid south-westerly groundswell to wrap in properly, and it is cleanest with light westerly to south-westerly winds.

Being the friendliest wave on the point means it is often busy, especially during the holidays, so share the waves and keep an eye out for learners. On bigger days the outside sections still pack a punch, and the current runs down the point, so paddle back up along the inside rather than through the lineup.
