Boneyards Surf Report & Forecast

Boneyards marks the top of the famous J-Bay point, where the coastline bends northwards and the swell first unloads on a shallow shelf of reef. The take-off is steep and heavy, and the wave breaks bigger and with more punch than the sections further down the line. On the right swell it reels straight into Supertubes, giving the few surfers who make it through the start one of the longest rides of their lives.

It needs a solid south-westerly groundswell with westerly to south-westerly winds, and it comes alive in the overhead range during the winter months. Smaller swells tend to section off here, so many surfers sit lower down at Supertubes until the sets build.

The lineup is small and competitive, the reef is shallow and the current pushes you down the point, so this is strictly a spot for experienced surfers. Watch a few sets first, pick your waves carefully and give way to the locals who know exactly where to sit.
