Surfing Cloudbreak

Cloudbreak is a powerful left-hand reef break on the barrier reef off Tavarua in Fiji's Mamanuca Islands, and many surfers rank it among the best waves on the planet. South Pacific groundswell meets the reef in deep blue water and peels down the line in long, fast walls and barrels, with an inside section known as Shish Kebabs that is notoriously shallow.

The prime season runs from about April to October, when south to south-westerly swells are most consistent and the south-easterly trade winds blow offshore. It holds swell from a few feet up to very large days, and it has hosted professional events including the World Surf League's Fiji Pro.

The reef is sharp and shallow, the currents are strong and access is by boat only, so Cloudbreak is for experienced surfers. For many years surfing it was limited to guests of the island resort, but Fiji's breaks have been open to everyone since 2010.
