Snapper is basically flat right now, and the models suggest tomorrow won't be much better: about 1 ft with a weak 4 second NE swell and a cross-onshore to onshore breeze, so give it a miss. Wednesday starts to wake up, with 2 to 4 ft and a tidy SSW offshore at dawn, then a cross-offshore SSE from midday through to about 5:53pm, which is the fair window. Thursday is the one to wait for: on the latest model run, 3 to 5 ft with a cross-offshore SSE of 14 km/h, best from 6 to 8am before the wind turns more cross-shore.

Spot guide
Snapper Rocks, at the southern end of the Gold Coast where Queensland meets New South Wales, is the start of the Superbank, a long sand-bottomed right-hander that can run from Snapper through Rainbow Bay and Greenmount towards Kirra. The bank was created by the Tweed River sand-bypassing scheme, which pumps sand past the river mouth and onto this stretch of coast.
The point works on east to south-easterly swells, including cyclone swells in late summer and autumn, and southerly winds blow offshore. When it lines up, the wave is fast and barrelling off the rocks before walling up for hundreds of metres, and it has long been a stage for the World Surf League's Championship Tour.
The catch is the crowd: on a good day hundreds of surfers share the Superbank, with constant drop-ins and a strong sweep running down the point. It suits advanced surfers who can handle the pace, and patience goes a long way in the lineup.
