Surfing Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay, on the east coast of Sri Lanka near the town of Pottuvil, is the country's best-known surf destination. Its Main Point is a right-hand point break that peels along a rocky point in long, fun walls, with several other points and beaches within easy reach by tuk-tuk.

The season runs from about May to October, when the south-west monsoon blows offshore on the east coast and swells from the southern Indian Ocean wrap up the coast. The waves are generally playful rather than powerful and are best in the chest- to head-high range, though bigger swells bring longer, faster rides.

Main Point suits intermediate surfers, while nearby breaks such as Baby Point and Whiskey Point are better for beginners. The lineup can get crowded in peak season, there are rocks and urchins at the point, and a relaxed village of guesthouses and cafés sits right behind the beach.
