Surfing Lower Trestles

Lower Trestles, in San Onofre State Beach just south of San Clemente in southern California, is one of the best high-performance waves in the world. A cobblestone reef at the mouth of San Mateo Creek shapes a near-perfect A-frame peak, with a long right and a shorter, punchy left that are ideal for turns and airs.

It works on swells from the south round to the west and north-west, but it is at its best on summer south and south-westerly swells, with light north-easterly winds blowing offshore in the mornings. Mid tide is usually the sweet spot, and the World Surf League has held its season-deciding Finals here.

Lowers is reached on foot along a trail from the car park, which keeps it from being even busier. The lineup is packed with skilled surfers, so it suits intermediate and advanced surfers who can hold their own in a crowd and know the etiquette.
