Surfing Seal Point
Seal Point sits at the tip of Cape St Francis, below the historic Seal Point lighthouse, and is one of the most consistent waves on this stretch of coast. Its exposed position means it picks up swell from a wide range of directions, so it often has surf when J-Bay, just up the coast, is small.
The wave is a right-hand point that breaks over a rock ledge, with the peak split into sections by a prominent rock known as the Full Stop. On bigger, cleaner days the sections link up into a long, fast ride with barrels and open faces for turns. It works on all tides, with the push often best, and it is cleanest in light westerly to south-westerly winds.
It suits competent intermediate and advanced surfers, and the lineup can be busy when it is good. The area has a sharky reputation, the rocks are sharp and the water can be cool, so surf with others and check the conditions properly before paddling out.
